Fringe World interview: The Western Saloon

As part of Fringe World 2016, do-re-media and Smash Enterprises are bringing you 10 hours of alt country music at The Railway Hotel in North Freo from 12pm on January 31st.

Dee from Delilah Rose & The Gunslingers let me know why it’s an event you need to be at.

Tell me about the event. What can we expect?
10 hours of local, alt country tunes in a relaxed backyard atmosphere on a Sunday arvo in North Freo

A Country music event is different than your usual fringe show, why do you think Perth audiences will engage?

We have a huge line up of variety and we’re happy for people to come and go as they please. Plus it’s family friendly.

It’s a big line up, why did you choose each act?

Alt country music has really taken off in the last 12 month and we have such an array of talent right here in Perth. We really wanted to start showcasing the genre and to run an event that the genre could start to call home. Tash Shanks (Smash Enterprises) and I came together to organise the event and we’re also involved in organising the Western Saloon WAM Stage (alt country stage) at Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, the first of its kind at a very traditional festival. We’re really excited about the opportunity.

You’re one of the performers, how will you be wowing us on Sunday?

We have a new EP coming out in Feb (although its already online at delilahrosemusic.bandcamp.com) and we’re super excited about it so we’ll be going through that and there will be some fab checks and cowboy boots…maybe a costume change mid set if i can’t decide what to wear!

Tell me about you guys? How long have you been together? How did you start up?

Delilah Rose & the Gunslingers have been together for approximately a year. My drummer and I have been besties since we were born so we have a long history. I met Bec our flutist through Colin and I found Josip through another friend. The line up of DRG is pretty flexible too so i have another guitarist, drummer and vocalist who are also available at times. They’re such an amazing bunch of musicians to have so close. I’m very blessed!

Who are your top picks for the day?

I can’t pick…it’d be like choosing between children

Why this venue?

The Railway Hotel is a local institution. One of the last remaining Perth pubs that is ACTUALLY still like an old pub. It’s how you used to remember they were. The beer garden is unexpectedly relaxing and not what you’d think would be out the back. Plus it’s Freo. Freo rocks.

Apart from some good music, what can we expect?

Hay bales, face painting, icey poles, pulled pork burgers, a rockin’ good time

Will you be putting on more of these shows?

Yep! Stay tuned! Tash and I have something up our sleeves with more of a hills vibe in the coming months

3 reasons to come down on Sunday

1) Pulled pork

2) Cowboy boots and check shirts

3) Support local music
